Juliana Bermudez Shares How She Started Her Digital Marketing Career

Juliana Bermudez - How I Got a Job in Digital Marketing

“Working in marketing allows me to express new ideas and try out new methods. “

Was your career path linear, or did a variety of experiences get you where you are today?

My career path was probably more linear than most, this job is my first industry position out of school so I feel very lucky to be in such a great position at Jelly right at the beginning of my career.

After high school, I enrolled in the two-year Graphic + Digital Design Diploma Program at the University of the Fraser Valley. After about a year of self-discovery and deciding what I wanted to do after graduating with my diploma, I got my first job at Jelly Marketing as one of two Multimedia Specialists, and almost 4 years later, I’m still thriving in the position!

Why did you pursue a career in digital marketing?

The thing that really drew me to working in Marketing is the fact I get to have my hands on almost every project and client that we work with, and try out many different mediums to make our clients shine. Every day gets to be a new experience which allows me to continuously grow and try new things. I never get bored!

What’s your favourite part about working in the field?

The freedom that working in marketing allows me to express new ideas and try out new methods. It’s also a huge plus to get to work with other amazing creatives on my team who inspire me and help our projects become better than they would have been if I was working on them alone.

Where do you think the future of digital marketing is heading?

We’re in the middle of a major change in the digital world. I think in the next few years we will see a lot more automated tools (ChatGPT and other AI tools for example) which will make our work a lot more automated. As a graphic designer, I really hope we can still keep some things more manual/organic to allow the human touch to shine through - without it, campaigns just don’t have that context and special something that us humans are really drawn to.

If you weren’t in digital marketing, what industry would you be in?

Being a graphic designer I could pretty much pick any industry to add my artistic touch to, which is another reason I chose to go down that path in University. I’m a huge foodie so I think it would be pretty cool to work for a restaurant or brewery to help their flavours shine with their branding and advertising elements! (Plus it wouldn't hurt to get some free food for the work ;))

What was your dream job as a kid?

Growing up watching Hannah Montana as a kid, I wanted to be a singer and actress like Miley Cyrus. As an introverted person that dream obviously didn’t come to fruition, but thankfully I was able to find a career that still allows me to flex my creative muscle!
