3 Social Media Trends You Need to Know

Reading Time: ~3 Mins | Written By: Mackenzie Mowat

Social media trends are constantly evolving every day. While there are tons of niche-trends on the day-to-day that are beneficial to incorporate into your social strategy, being able to zoom out and look at trends on a larger scale makes it easier to plan out your content without waiting for the next viral trend to pop up. We have some trends you should definitely be aware of as you continue to plan content for this year!

Video Content

With the rapid growth of TikTok (and it’s not done!) as well as all the other short-form video platforms out there now, such as Instagram Reels and Youtube Shorts, we know that video is quickly becoming the dominant content on our social platforms. If the head of Instagram is plainly stating that the app is going to move away from being a photo app to focus more on video, it’s probably a good idea to take that advice and get recording.

While short-from video is still a great way to grab attention and engagement from your audience, it’s worth mentioning that longer-form video content is still valuable. TikTok began with maxing out its video length at 60 seconds, then 3 minutes, and recently revealed that this time will increase to a whopping 10 minutes. This goes to show that the short, catchy videos are enough to draw users in, but when users build a trust and connection with channels they enjoy, they are still looking to invest time in what the brand’s have to say.

Opportunities for Creators are Expanding

So long are the days of only looking to partner with verified accounts or influencers with hundreds of thousands of followers. Not only do macro-influencers require a much larger budget from a brand standpoint, but we are learning that more often than not, it’s about the quality of an influencer’s following more than the quantity. Brands are happy to partner with small creators on platforms like TikTok because they are simply great at authentically representing their products and have an engaged and interested audience. If you’ve been waiting to post that TikTok or Reel about your new favourite product - this is your sign to post and get noticed!

Social Media Is E-commerce

Social media has shifted from a place where you keep up with old friends from high school to where you are introduced to and fall in love with new brands every day. Prior to 2020, 81% of shoppers were already using social media to research brands and products. With the instant gratification the “Buy it Now” button on Amazon Prime has given us, paired with the brand connection we can feel through apps like Instagram and TikTok, users are looking to make that step to purchasing even more seamless than it had been before. If you sell products and you aren’t already utilizing the e-commerce options on your social channels, this will be hugely beneficial for you.

Do you agree with these trends? We hope you learned something new or gained some inspiration for your social strategy this year. Keeping these trends in mind will definitely help set your social media presence up for success in the coming months. Have fun creating!
