Google is constantly changing its metrics for ranking sites based on organic searches. As a business owner, this means you have to keep up with these changes to outrank competitors. Is having a site that follows Search Engine Optimization (SEO) best practices and is mobile-friendly still a top priority, or is making a site easier to navigate and having faster loading times more important?

Regardless of the industry your business is in, if you want to rank at the top of search engines, you need to make your site user-friendly. Here are a few ways to achieve that and improve your site's ranking on Google and other search engines.

Limit Restrictions

  • Avoid Annoying Popups: You know those annoying popups that require you to input your email before a visitor can actually view your site? Or those annoying banner ads forcing visitors to click a link to move forward? These restrict your page from being user-friendly and can turn visitors away.

  • Make the Site Limit-Free: Make the site as "limit-free" as possible. Remember, you are dealing with people, not programmers. Ensure the site is easy to use, navigate, and find content.

KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)

  • Easy Username Creation: In terms of having to create a username, make sure these are easy for your visitors. If they need to include numbers, letters, symbols, etc., certain people are more likely to avoid creating a username.

  • Simple Features: Allow visitors to “checkout” as a guest, rather than having to create an account when shopping online. Make it easy for them to save usernames (and passwords if they choose to do so). This reduces the amount of work they have to do when visiting your site and increases the likelihood that they will return.

State It Upfront

  • Be Transparent About Shipping and Payment Options: Let’s use a shopping site as an example to illustrate this. If you sell goods to consumers online but do not ship to certain countries, clearly state this on the main page. Or, if you only accept PayPal as a payment form, inform visitors of this on the homepage.

Reduce Frustration: This transparency limits visitor frustration and lets them know what is required before shopping on your site, ultimately leading to happier visitors.
