With Universal Analytics no longer processing data starting July 1, 2023, all businesses will need to make the shift to Google Analytics 4 (GA4). While this task may seem daunting, it is a necessary step in order to continue tracking user behaviour, conversions, and website performance.
One of the key aspects of leveraging GA4 effectively is aligning its goals with your business objectives. By doing so, you can ensure that your analytics efforts are driving meaningful results and contributing to the growth of your organization. Depending on your previous history with Google Analytics, there are different instructions that will aid your set-up. You can find instructions here if you’re setting up Analytics for the first time, have a website currently using Universal Analytics, or are looking to add GA4 to a website building platform such as Wix, Squarespace, or WordPress.
Once this is complete, GA4 will start collecting data from your website, allowing you to analyze and measure your goals effectively.
Define Goals on Your Website to Track
Once you have defined your business objectives and set up GA4, the next step is to identify the specific goals on your website that you want to track. These goals could include newsletter sign-ups, contact form submissions, product purchases, or any other action that is important to your business. One of the best ways to do this is by going through each page of your website one by one and making note of any actions that are of value to you. These actions are crucial for our next step!

It also offers Enhanced Measurement, which is able to report events such as scrolls, video engagements, form interactions, outbound clicks, and file downloads. It is crucial to determine the specific actions on your website that indicate goal completion and configure GA4 accordingly by going to Admin > Events and then highlighting your desired actions to be marked as Conversions.
Sometimes, however, your website may require further tracking. For example, if you have multiple contact forms on your website, you will want to have these differentiated in your GA4.
One way to streamline the process and enhance tracking capabilities is by utilizing Google Tag Manager (GTM). By leveraging GTM, you are able to fully customize tags and triggers that best align with your unique business and website.
